Home Improvement: Important Things You Need to Know About Energy Efficient Lighting

There are many good reasons for choosing energy efficient products, with the most important and satisfying being that you are doing something good for the environment while cutting energy costs. Of course the fact that you are doing something good for your immediate surrounds and family should not be left out. Not everyone is an expert on being eco-friendly, though, and this article is aimed at informing those that are new to being “green” about modern energy efficient lighting.

Advice for Beginners

Unfortunately not all green products are actually energy efficient and do the environment good. There are many scams and especially those that are new to these concepts are easily tricked into falling for these fraudulent claims. The best way to keep your self from becoming a victim is to learn and retain a healthy amount of skepticism. Before purchasing something always know the basics and check to see if it is legitimate and has been tested for its effectiveness.

Incandescent Light Bulbs

These old-school lights basically give out more heat than they bring out light. They’re dubbed as the world’s most famous electricity wasters. Yes, the great Thomas Edison invented these bulbs, but then, he wasn’t around anymore to solve its energy wasting problems. And besides, the term energy efficiency didn’t really exist yet during his time. Who can blame him? At least he invented the thing and helped to bring about modern technology. The upside to this is that they’re very cheap now.

Fluorescent Light

Advancements in lighting were made with the development of fluorescent lights. These lights are energy efficient because they last up to ten times longer than regular incandescent light bulbs. Fluorescent lights are best used for large, wide rooms and the one downside is that for many people they have a blue appearance that bothers some people. The compact fluorescent bulb solves this problem since it is warmer in quality and color and as an added bonus they save even more energy than other standard fluorescent lights.

The LED Lights

LED lights are generally speaking the most energy efficient form of lighting available. This is because they are the longest lasting and more durable. On the other side, they are also more expensive to purchase. The initial costs at the time of purchase are quickly made up for in the long term because they reduce energy costs. Another advantage of LED lights is that they stay cool, even if they are on for a long time.

Now that you know about the basics of the various types of lighting, you will better be able to choose the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly products for your lights. To sum it up you can choose to pay more for the initial purchase and save in the long run, or pay less upfront and spend more on energy costs. However, for lights that are not often used it is also fine to choose regular light bulbs. Generally speaking, purchasing energy efficient lighting means more affordable electric bills and at the same time you will be doing something good for the environment.
