This is the perfect read for moms like you who have a music lover of a kid. Decorating his bedroom to show his musical interests can be done in these simple steps. Read on and learn how:

For wall decorating, use music-themed stencils and trace them on the wall’s borders. Such stencils vary from musical notes like G clef, flats and trebles to piano keys or guitar strings. Use a dark colored paint in tracing the lines for the stencils in order to make the images stand out.

If your kid plays the piano, reflect that on his beddings by choosing a black and white motif. Alternatively, you can get a beddings set with a music theme, especially if he’s into different instruments. Every time he changes his bedsheets, a new look and inspiration spark up.

Your window dressings, you can play around and use your imagination for a music themed room. You may string up some old CDs or vinyl records on a strong piece of rope or twine and hang them up as a valance on hooks anchored into either side of your curtain box. You may also cut out music notes from solid black fabric or felt then glue them onto a valance in solid white. Or if you wish to stick to traditional curtains for your window treatments, go for black and white printed or solid black or solid white drapes.

Posters and photos of his favorite artists are great ways to express his interest. This way, he will also be constantly inspired with the image of his favorite musicians. Frame the posters or photos for a classier look.

Don’t forget to adorn the floor with area rugs. If the motif is in black and white, you can easily find an area rug in this color combination as it is a popular choice for a contemporary home theme. An option is to buy two shag rugs, one in white and the other in black. As for other colors, purchase area rugs that suit the motif of the room.

When he is in his room, his creativity will flow as he has the right ambience for this, and he will be well on his way to becoming the music virtuoso he has always wanted to be.

A common decorating question is how to match his things with her things. How to decorate properly with both opposite elements and how to achieve a look of balance in a home.

Couples should adjust not only to one’s quirks and peeves but also to how one lives and wellhow one decorates their “territory” at home. How sad it would be to see a house with an almost visible line that separates his stuff from hers. On the right sidethe masculine! On the left sidethe feminine!

Do you see that pink fluffy (or feathery) rug that is sitting on the floor in front of the television set? That may look good in the bathroom, but you have a guy in the house now and we are sure he despises it. Instead of having this rug, you should opt for a more unisex area rug. There are many different unisex area rugs that we know you will enjoy. Just because it is not pink or doesn’t have a sports emblem on it does not mean it is no good.

The truth is that you should never underestimate just how powerful color can be. When you blend in his and her colors, you are definitely going to be replenishing the room. For instance, having brown walls with neutral his/her backdrops is perfect. You could have a black chest (for him) and a white chair that creates that relaxing look (for her).

Don’t be afraid to mix and match. There’s no rule that states you can’t combine manly objects with feminine ones. You’ll be surprised how the fusion of the two can result to an amazing interior. Just remember to balance things out, except if you really plan to make a room masculine like the game room or feminine like the kitchen.

Changing the look and color of the furnishings to suit both his and hers is easily feasible with a mere change in covering or upholstery. You can also consider the use of drapes, throws and other fabrics to go well with the blending of the his and hers decorating style.

by Eric Parker

When your teen decides to go Goth, you can decorate her bedroom in a way that will help her feel completely at home, even if your personal style, as reflected in the rest of the home, is completely opposite.

Despite the “dark” image of a Goth space (and fashion), it’s not impossible to make the bedroom look welcoming, especially for those visitors who are not exactly Goth fans. Don’t make the room too horrifying or extreme to the taste. Sure, your kid will love it (teens love anything extreme, don’t they?) but take into account the other family members (like you) who may peek into the room once in a while. It must still be appealing enough to suit other’s tastes.

First, know how dark you intend to go with your colors. Whenever we think about Goth, the first thing that comes to mind is black. For your walls, you may instead opt for deep red or purple with a black accent. Alternatively, use the stone block style which is reminiscent of medieval castles, along with your deep red or purple. You may have three of the walls in deep purple or violet, and then apply faux stones onto the fourth wall. Or for a less permanent solution, simply dip a large square sponge into gray paint and create the semblance of bricks on your wall. To complete the brick wall effect, use a plain brush to add darker and lighter tones. Or simply settle for wallpaper with a brick wall print.

The floor will also benefit from a dark-colored area rug. You can use multiple rugs if the room is big or if not, one large rug in front of the bed will do.

A wrought iron bed or a heavy wooden four poster bed frame with a lot of richly colored velvet drapery reflects the classic Goth style. Make sure that all woods used in the room are dark with a lot of intricate carving detail. Pick bed linen in deep purple or violet. Add as many accent pillows as possible, piling them onto the bed in varying sizes and shapes. Pillow cases would be great in heavy red velvets, complete with intricate embroidery.

Accessorizing is the most fun in this decorating project. You guys can really let your imagination run wild. Gargoyles, columns and arches, coffins, table with wrought iron legs, faux iron for lamps, skulls, crucifixes, artworks and vampire pictures are just some of the decorations that you can use for a Goth design.

Shop wisely though. Take advantage of thrift stores and salvage stores. This Gothic phase may pass quickly and before you know it, your teen is clamoring for a new bedroom do. It’s better to have some money saved for that day of yet another change.

Every home is different but when it comes to decorating your home you may feel overwhelmed when you look around the room and notice how small it really is. Can you create a larger looking room? One that adds more light? Yes you can. How you decorate is entirely up to you but you can make every corner in your room stand out and feel welcoming.

If you want to add light to your room then try using light shades on the floors, walls and ceilings. You want to make sure that your furniture is a light color as well. If you do not add a large amount of dark colors then the room will look more open. Your base colors should be a white or cream shade. You can always add color when you accent.

You want to add accents to your room, especially if the room is large and has a large amount of open space. If your room is large you may want to consider breaking it into several distinct areas for example, an open living area. It won’t cost you the expense of an entire wall in fact you just need to purchase accents and decorative objects.

If you have a long bare wall in the room you may want to place several framed photos on that wall or a picture within a group that will break up the look. Your pictures will be able to help create the illusion of two separated areas even though there are no walls standing between them.

One solution to seperate rooms is to purchase an area rug for each section. This will help you separate different parts of your space. You can use a large rug to put down in front of all the seating in the living room. Or you can add a group of rugs in a certain area to get the same effect. For example, you can place a group of four rugs with a small gap in between each one to give the illusion of one large area rug.

What you do with your living space is entirely up to you, but some spaces simply lend themselves to open plan living while others do not. It is of course your decision whether you decide to go open plan or not. The results can be extremely impressive but the emphasis should always be on light and ease of movement, otherwise you will end up with a very cluttered space which doesn’t look open plan, even if there are no separating walls at all. The idea is to have only minimal separation of the different areas, a mental division of living from eating from cooking, rather than actual physical barriers.

If you’re ready to go from dark to bright or safe to adventurous, more colors are just waiting, ready for your use to help brighten your home. You can utilize colors in several ways, such as the following:

Colors on Furniture

If you think that you need to totally refurnish your home to enjoy a new look, then you will be surprised to know that all you really need is to hit your local department store for a few inexpensive items to make your old furnishings look brand new. Sofas and chairs can easily be covered with liners, but you will want to look for the right size and shape for a perfect fit. To measure your sofa or chairs, remember to measure both the length and width of the back and seat, as well as the arms and armrests.

Your old tables will have a second chance at life by a refurnishing work. You can do this by sanding the table to rough the surface followed by applying a coat of primer. After which, paint your desired color or paint a pattern or design to complement the old color. Using vivid hues for your table design will give it a brand new look. See how easy that is?

Colors on the Floor

If you want to make a simple change, then you can easily add new area rugs to any room in your home for an instant update in color and style. For a brightening effect, you will want to look for area rugs that are colored in patterns that accentuate the colors that are already in your home, without being too overwhelming for the room. For example, pastel yellows can go a long way toward making any room lighter and brighter, without taking away from the other colors in your room.

Solid colors are aplenty in area rugs. Therefore, if you wish to coordinate monotone colors, go for area rugs that have a plain or basic color instead of loud patterns or mixed tones. For example, a white area rug is perfect for white walls or furnishings; black area rug for a white or light-colored room; red, blue and other bright solid hues with a neutral-colored room.

Open Up Your Windows

Sure, opening the windows literally brings in natural light that has the mesmerizing effect of enhancing the colors and objects in a room. But add in window accessories like blinds and curtains while using a complementing color at the same time, maximizes the appealing effect in a room.

Renovating the floor is one of the effective ways to create a major change in a living space. Renovation however, doesn’t have to be a major work of taking out the old flooring and installing a new one. A simple work of doing something about the floor’s exterior can do a lot of good. No carpentry, installation or poking here and there needed. Sure, cleaning does wonders too but complementing the flooring with the room’s color, decors and/or fixtures gives a room an appealing interior.

Ceramic is a particularly effective flooring material. The strong earthen color of terracotta stands out well against pale walls and ceilings and ceramic floors can be as cool or as warm as you want, as underfloor heating works well underneath them, taking the edge off the cold. Furniture is easily moved over a ceramic surface, so when the floor is down and it is time to start moving the couch, you can change your mind as often as you like without breaking your other half’s back.

Ceramics come in a wide range of colors and the tiles are available in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and designs. You can easily design a geometric pattern on your floor, reminiscent of the old Roman houses, or just lay the floor entirely in one color and this will provide a simple yet dramatic contrast within the room. A dark floor of terracotta will provide a simple yet impressive contrast with pale walls and a floor tiled entirely in white will stand out well against darker walls and ceilings. If you intend to decorate in a geometric or cubist theme, then continuing this onto the floor will be an interesting detail. Not everyone will notice, but those that do will be impressed.

Decorating the floor can simply be accomplished with the use of area rugs. Rugs are the most useful for spacious rooms or spaces that don’t have much adornment, color or design. The area rug’s color, design, shape or pattern can be a moving contrast from the room’s walls or furnishings, or a seamless match to the rest of the room. Decorating is always enhanced with the use of area rugs.

Whether you want a clean, sleek floor or one that is embellished and colorful, the bottom line is that no decorating project will ever be a success without including the floors to the equation. If you want a complete makeover, don’t ever forget your floor!

Have you had a good look lately at your rec room, a room where you planned to have a space for you and your family to be comfortable? Do you think it looks more like a ‘wreck’ than a rec room? Is the floor a minefield of toys, and do you have trouble seeing the television yourself because the kids who want to play are always in the way? If so, then maybe your rec room needs an overhaul, so that it really is the comfortable space you once envisaged.

When you first thought of having a rec room, you probably created an ideal image of how it would be. Whatever happened to that ideal? The main problem may well be the floor plan, and this can be rearranged with just a simple trick or two. The first thing to do is to put your television set in the middle of the smallest wall. Then have the furniture facing it, and placed quite close; around five feet away is good. Your viewing area is probably smaller than it was, but you can still seat the same number of people, and the trade off is extra space. Put a thick, soft rug in front of the television so kids can sit comfortably on the floor.

Now get rid of other furnishings. Remove anything you don’t use regularly. People often store items in their rec room because they can’t think of a better place for them. This turns your rec room into a junk room, and makes it less than functional. Once you’ve removed those items you should have some free floor space.

So, how should you use this space you have gained? The kids now have extra play space, so sort their toys so that you have play centers. Schools and day care centers usually use this system too. All it means is that toys which fit into a specific category are collected in one area. For example, you can have a kitchen center where all the cooking theme play equipment is placed. You can put a small area rug down here and place the kitchen type toys here. Make a rule that this is the kitchen, and kitchen toys stay here. Other play areas around the room follow the same kind of rule, so that all around the room there are defined areas for specific types of play.

If your children love to read, add a great seating area for their books so they can enjoy and relax. Adding a great seating area for reading may encourage your child to read more than they might have had before. Place chairs, a table, and maybe a few larger pillows in this area to make sure they are comfortable.

Rugs will also organize a space and encourage the design to show its uniqueness. It will define the separate areas yet give you that coziness you want in a rec rooms design.

Are you ready for a decorating change in your home? Would you like a home that’s beautifully decorated and one that will have your neighbors envious? A home that’s stylish and as comfortable to live in?

Of course you would, but where do you start? It starts with knowing what your personal style is. Your personal style is a reflection of you and your past and present experiences.

Your education, travel experiences, vacations, and shopping trips all add to the collection of memorabilia that can be tastefully displayed in your home or apartment.

The stoneware you purchased in England, the area rug in India and the pottery in Italy all reflect your personal style and taste.

All the special memorabilia that you’ve collected, whether it came from a special vacation cruise or second hand store were purchased because you liked it or it made you feel good. This is what your personal style is.

Now if you are in doubt about what your personal style is, take a stroll to a few furniture stores in your area. They will display designer showcase or “vignettes” that will give you tons of decorating ideas for your home, from furniture to lamps and everything in between.

Furniture stores will display vignettes of living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and dining rooms. Each vignette will show all types of colors, fabrics, textures, lighting, furniture and so forth. I’m sure it’ll spark a lot of creativity within and start your juices flowing.

If you plan to purchase on one of these shopping sprees, first and foremost, make sure you have your measurements readily available. Never buy furniture without measuring your space.

For more great decorating ideas you’ll want to shop your favorite design magazines. Make sure to clip out your favorites and take them with you on your shopping trip. The sales representatives can help you find your personal style.

The bathroom is a highly functional room in the house. Without it, well you can just imagine how difficult life must be. Unfortunately, it is often neglected when it’s time to redecorate with the misconception that it is a tedious and expensive task. This article will prove otherwise…

To initiate the makeover of your bathroom it is necessary to decrease clutter. Take everything out of your cabinets/vanities and countertops. Go through all the products and decide what you really need. The items that are a must have store them temporarily in a spot where you can easily store find them later. Everything else you don’t need get rid of it. Figure out a plan to get organized. Next, you will head to your favorite discount store for storage devices. Look for plastic boxes, storage bins, drawer dividers, and clear cosmetic bags. These can come in different colors so if you find a set you really love consider adding their color scheme to your bathroom.

Next, organize not only the small items but the big ones too, such as your towels, drawers and cosmetic bags. If you have several towels in the bathroom, install a towel rack or towel pegs that don’t cost much.

Design the bathroom with stenciled patterns on the walls, window, mirror and/or ceiling. Repainting might cost you some, so a simple artwork on the walls can also make the bathroom look better. A good idea for a wall decor is a nice photo or painting.

You can easily match your shower curtain and towels to an area rug. Bath area rugs can be found in multiple colors. Remember you don’t have to choose the standard style area rug. Area rugs are available in different shapes and sizes too. Take care though to pick the right size area rug for your bathroom floor. You don’t want it to be too large or too small. Area rugs, in the bathroom are good for soaking up water after a shower or bath and will keep your feet from being cold on the tile floor. Just make sure that the water will not damage your area rug before placing it in the bathroom. This is truly a great way to add a bit of luxury to your bathroom.

Lastly, maintain cleanliness in your bathroom. This doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. As long as you have handy cleaning products, you’re all set. No amount of bright colors, area rugs or stencils can make your bathroom nice if it’s unclean. A bathroom with minimal decors looks far better than a highly-decorated but messy bathroom.

Don’t you just love nice bedrooms? The kind that is so comfortable and welcoming that any thoughts of work and stress just fly out the window. This ideal bedroom is actually very easy to achieve. With key decorative items, you too can have your own heaven on earth – your bedroom.

To turn your bedroom into a sanctuary start with transforming the bed. If you have available to you wooden doors, an iron gate, or any other interesting item that can be attached to the wall turn it in to a headboard. Next concentrate on bed linens.

Changing or adding colors can be done through the fabrics. The beddings, curtain, coverings and area rugs are available in different colors that can give personality to your bedroom. The textures too, particularly the soft and lush will add to the cozy feel of the room. As you are after a relaxing atmosphere, you would want to use light colors. Shabby chic prioritizes neutrals, pastels and white. Floral prints and some stripes are also common in this design.

The furnishings, like the dresser, coffee table and chair can be rustic and old. If your mom still has her antique chest, it would look great too. Picture frames that look worn-out or rustic may be small items but nevertheless give a shabby chic quality to the room.

Area rugs not only contribute to the color and texture factors but also give the bedroom a welcoming look. Just imagine entering the bedroom with a plush area rug in the center. Or stepping on a soft rug upon climbing the bed or upon waking up. To keep up with the shabby chic look, select a rug that has a light color or a simple pattern. A floral-printed rug looks really pretty. For more style, pick out a round or oblong rug. It will stand out as the bedroom’s focal piece of decor.

An area rug can complete your room by giving it the warmth and comfort that you need. You do not have to use a typical dark, rectangular area rug. You can choose from a variety of rugs that will fit the color scheme. So keeping with your shabby chic theme, pick area rugs that are pastel in color or have a floral print. If you can not find an area rug you like, consider having one made to fit your room and personality perfectly. Additionally, the area rug does not necessarily need to go on the floor.

Area rugs can make excellent tapestries, so think outside the box and hang it on the wall. This shows real creativity, which can help add energy to the room. Your bedroom is the place in your home where you reenergize. It should be cozy and warm just for you.
