The season permits you to paint your walls with your windows open and your furniture outside where there’s a lot of fresh air to break up potentially detrimental fumes you may gasp. When you’re thinking big time overhauls such as redoing or changing your roof, summer is all the more perfect. This time of year is all you need to give your living areas those new, exciting spices. And while it’s tempting to work only on where you welcome guests, your bedroom should be given as much attention.

Essentially, your bedroom should almost certainly be your center since this is where you’ll spend most of your time in when you’re at home. Your bedroom furniture is also what bears the brunt of your daily wear. Count the number of hours you lay in your bed each day, including nights when you’re tossing and turning since sleep is elusive.

How frequently do you sit on that chair while brushing your hair and marveling at it endlessly on your dresser’s mirror? How much have you wiped off your closet’s finish as you desperately try to find a good outfit to wear to the office each day? It shouldn’t hurt giving this part of your home the care it needs to offer you a more relaxed experience each night you retire in it.

A good way to start your bedroom enhancement project is to build a miniature scale model of your room or to simply draw a floor plan where you can arrange and disarrange the bedroom furniture you have. If you’re thinking of getting a new set, having a concrete picture you can manipulate such as a scale model or drawing will give you all the advantage of moving things around without even touching them yet. Your bed, nightstand, cabinets, study table and that warm, cushy couch should be all in the right places. Experiment with the arrangements and keep in mind that balance is the key to every well-furnished living space.

Compared to getting new furniture, giving old pieces a new look is so much more stimulating because they pose a challenge that may be difficult at first but is very rewarding once you’ve pieced things together. You have to think of colors, textures, and visual weights of the pieces and how to make them come together so that they’ll end up looking like a whole new set you bought at once. The challenging part is how to mix everything flawlessly so they come out as an easy match.

It would be wonderful to have all the reasons to want coming home to your bedroom at the end of each day. Give it a nice do this summer when you have Mother Nature on your side as you repaint your walls and furniture or simply refinish them.

You may also get encouragement for your designs by viewing online some nice pine bedroom furniture and the other wood varieties, dining room furniture and other items that you may even consider buying as you set out to give your home a new refreshing look this summer.

Every home is different but when it comes to decorating your home you may feel overwhelmed when you look around the room and notice how small it really is. Can you create a larger looking room? One that adds more light? Yes you can. How you decorate is entirely up to you but you can make every corner in your room stand out and feel welcoming.

If you want to add light to your room then try using light shades on the floors, walls and ceilings. You want to make sure that your furniture is a light color as well. If you do not add a large amount of dark colors then the room will look more open. Your base colors should be a white or cream shade. You can always add color when you accent.

You want to add accents to your room, especially if the room is large and has a large amount of open space. If your room is large you may want to consider breaking it into several distinct areas for example, an open living area. It won’t cost you the expense of an entire wall in fact you just need to purchase accents and decorative objects.

If you have a long bare wall in the room you may want to place several framed photos on that wall or a picture within a group that will break up the look. Your pictures will be able to help create the illusion of two separated areas even though there are no walls standing between them.

One solution to seperate rooms is to purchase an area rug for each section. This will help you separate different parts of your space. You can use a large rug to put down in front of all the seating in the living room. Or you can add a group of rugs in a certain area to get the same effect. For example, you can place a group of four rugs with a small gap in between each one to give the illusion of one large area rug.

What you do with your living space is entirely up to you, but some spaces simply lend themselves to open plan living while others do not. It is of course your decision whether you decide to go open plan or not. The results can be extremely impressive but the emphasis should always be on light and ease of movement, otherwise you will end up with a very cluttered space which doesn’t look open plan, even if there are no separating walls at all. The idea is to have only minimal separation of the different areas, a mental division of living from eating from cooking, rather than actual physical barriers.

Renovating the floor is one of the effective ways to create a major change in a living space. Renovation however, doesn’t have to be a major work of taking out the old flooring and installing a new one. A simple work of doing something about the floor’s exterior can do a lot of good. No carpentry, installation or poking here and there needed. Sure, cleaning does wonders too but complementing the flooring with the room’s color, decors and/or fixtures gives a room an appealing interior.

Ceramic is a particularly effective flooring material. The strong earthen color of terracotta stands out well against pale walls and ceilings and ceramic floors can be as cool or as warm as you want, as underfloor heating works well underneath them, taking the edge off the cold. Furniture is easily moved over a ceramic surface, so when the floor is down and it is time to start moving the couch, you can change your mind as often as you like without breaking your other half’s back.

Ceramics come in a wide range of colors and the tiles are available in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and designs. You can easily design a geometric pattern on your floor, reminiscent of the old Roman houses, or just lay the floor entirely in one color and this will provide a simple yet dramatic contrast within the room. A dark floor of terracotta will provide a simple yet impressive contrast with pale walls and a floor tiled entirely in white will stand out well against darker walls and ceilings. If you intend to decorate in a geometric or cubist theme, then continuing this onto the floor will be an interesting detail. Not everyone will notice, but those that do will be impressed.

Decorating the floor can simply be accomplished with the use of area rugs. Rugs are the most useful for spacious rooms or spaces that don’t have much adornment, color or design. The area rug’s color, design, shape or pattern can be a moving contrast from the room’s walls or furnishings, or a seamless match to the rest of the room. Decorating is always enhanced with the use of area rugs.

Whether you want a clean, sleek floor or one that is embellished and colorful, the bottom line is that no decorating project will ever be a success without including the floors to the equation. If you want a complete makeover, don’t ever forget your floor!

Feng Shui may be a foreign terminology but it is far from being an alien concept for many people, especially for the home decorating enthusiasts, culture vultures and fans of anything Chinese. The simplest definition of Feng Shui is that it’s an ancient design principle that originated in China used for creating positive chi (known in layman’s term as energy) in a living space. The end goal is to have harmony. The positioning of things, types of objects, shapes and colors are elements of Feng Shui. They are responsible for the flow of energy or lack thereof. They determine if a living space has positive or negative chi and if there’s balance in the space.

Feng Shui comes from a set of ancient Chinese beliefs. Its core principle is to optimize the flow of chi by properly positioning objects inside and outside the home. It’s said that a good flow of chi will bring good luck, happiness and better health to everyone inside the home. On the other hand, blocked or dead chi is often related to misfortune and illnesses.

It is impossible to become a feng shui expert overnight, especially since incorporating these principles into your home demands a careful study into the geography and orientation of the property itself. You also have to determine several different aspects such as the Chinese zodiac sign and the lucky number of each household member. There’s a plethora of factors you have to take into consideration in order to achieve the ‘perfect’ or ideal feng shui setup at home.

One example is the general rule of placing objects without causing obstruction in movement. They say if you can’t move freely in a room because the furniture “block” the way, chi is blocked as well. Hence, the flow of energy is affected. This can cause sickness, ill feelings among family members, loss of wealth, stress and other negativity. Mirrors are also said to affect the flow of chi as they can somehow change the path of energy.

Trusting your instincts while rearranging furniture will more or less help you determine if the room feels right or not for you. With a good feng shui book and a little trial and error, you should soon find the perfect combination that brings harmony to your home.

Feng Shui is a complex study. There are such factors as the locations – East, West, North or South. Also, the elements of Chinese astrology, zodiac and numbers. Yin and Yang do not only signify the good and bad or masculine and feminine. In Feng Shui, this means quiet energy for Yin and active energy for Yang. So, the location of the rooms also has to correspond to the Yin and Yang to achieve the purpose of relaxation and activity. The bedroom and living room for instance should have more Yin energy while the kitchen should have the Yang energy.

Self-study is an effective tool for learning more about Feng Shui. There are also seminars and workshops that are helpful for people who don’t have any formal background but are into applying Feng Shui in their lives.

While there’s nothing wrong with following the rules of feng shui for your home, always keep in mind that it is only a guide to enhancing good luck and positive vibes. Whether its success in your career or in redecorating your house, it is only hard work and patience that will guarantee success.
